2008

2008 saw a very British story and a very American story successfully compete for audiences.  The British import BILLY ELLIOT made history at the Tony Awards when, for the time ever, the three young actors who portray the title character jointly won for Best Actor in a Musical. With its authentic portrayal of Latinos in NYC’s Washington Heights neighborhood and infectious contemporary score, IN THE HEIGHTS proved that musicals were heading in an entirely new direction with composer/author/star Lin Manuel Miranda leading the way. This was also the year that Patti LuPone blew everyone away with her dynamic portrayal of Mama Rose in GYPSY.
