I’m calling this year’s crop “the spectrum.” On one hand we have musicals such as FUN HOME, HAMILTON, ALLEGIANCE, AMAZING GRACE and the SPRING AWAKENING revival that deal with some pretty heavy subjects. Then on the opposite end, much more light-hearted fare like HONEYMOON IN VEGAS. SOMETHING ROTTEN, and ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. Then there’s the KING & I revival, FINDING NEVERLAND and THE VISIT that seem to fall somewhere in the middle.
Just a final FYI: On this list are three shows making opening within the next few weeks — the revivals of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF starring Tony winner Danny Burstein and THE COLOR PURPLE featuring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery and the new musical SCHOOL OF ROCK based on the film of the same name.
