Welcome to SPOTLIGHT ON ... our monthly Q&A with musical theatre and cabaret professionals.

Vocalist LUBA Mason has appeared on Broadway in JEKYLL & HYDE, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, CHICAGO and THE CAPEMAN. She kicks off a tour of her latest cabaret show, COLLAGE, later this month. The show will feature selections from her current CD, also titled COLLAGE.

The COLLAGE CD has a rather unique mix of songs.  With so much material to choose from, why did these particular songs make the cut?

Each song that I chose had a personal connection to me in one form or another. The idea of making this album was a process of about 2 years so I really had time to choose carefully, songs that initially expressed my views, emotions, thoughts and my past.

Given its eclectic nature, was there a concern that the CD would be difficult to market?

No. I never want to make an album based on marketability. The material and the process has to come from me organically which I hope will give the album a soul and the listener will be able to hear and feel that.

Tell us about plans for the upcoming COLLAGE concert and tour. Who is booking the tour etc? When and where are some of your upcoming performances?

I'm so excited about the tour and am very happy to have met Kristopher McDowell who is booking it. The tour will be launched in San Francisco at the EXIT THEATRE June 21-23 and then a benefit performance on June 24 in Merced, CA. The show will feature songs from the album as well as songs I've sung from Broadway shows I've performed in like "Jekyll & Hyde", "How To Succeed..." and "Chicago". The show is a "COLLAGE" of my life thus far, so people will get to know me, my family, my work and explore the various musical styles of my repertoire. It will be a great evening of a variety of interesting music and fun.

Your second CD -- a Brazilian album -- is in the works. Why a Brazilian album?

I've loved Brazilian music for the past 9 years since my husband first introduced me to it. I feel the music suits me vocally and where I am in my life right now. I'm writing original material for the album for the first time, music and lyrics with a Brazilian foundation in rhythm and some influences of pop.

You initially trained in classical music.  What changed the path?

I was a classical pianist for 12 years since the age of 5. Then did my first musical in High School and saw my first Broadway show. That ended the piano lessons. I knew then that that's what I wanted to do. It beats sitting in a practice room playing piano for 3-4 hours a day by myself.

With Robert Cuccioli in JEKYLL & HYDE

I enjoyed seeing you as Lucy in JEKYLL & HYDE on Broadway.  Lucy is a character with so many different layers. What’s your approach to playing such a complex character?

I was taught at NYU's Circle in the Square to do my homework on a role, writing a character analysis, who she is, where she's from, what are her conflicts and why. Between research and then bringing some characteristics of myself to the role, the layers begin to build. Also with rehearsal and eventually with each performance, I learn more about the nuances of the character and one begins to get real specific and clear about who this person is that he/she is playing. The layers just grow and grow and my character grows the longer I play her

You were also in the company of one of the most notable flop musicals of the 90s -- Paul Simon’s THE CAPEMAN. Why do you believe this show just couldn’t find an audience?

It wasn't that it couldn't find an audience, the show suffered basically from really bad press, a first time around creative team which lead to several directors and lots of confusion. Everything spiraled and the show never had a chance even BEFORE we opened! I still think it had one of the best scores I have heard on Broadway (Paul Simon) and the show was definitely ahead of its time in concept, design and vision.

As Hedy la Rue in the Broadway revival of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING

What are some of the other musical theatre roles you’ve performed and are there any particular favorites?

As I mentioned earlier, Lucy in "Jekyll & Hyde", Hedy LaRue in "How To Succeed In Business...", Velma Kelly in "Chicago", Julie in "Showboat", Ziegfield's Favorite in "The Will Rogers Follies", Mrs. Krezinski in "the Capeman". Each was my favorite for different reasons. Playing Lucy was a fulfilling singing experience, Hedy was the crazy comedienne, Velma was a challenge to dance again after 15 yrs. (Fosse no less), Ziegfeld's Favorite was my first ROLE on Broadway, and Capeman, I met my future husband.

Any recent or upcoming TV or film projects?

Most recently I guest starred on Jeff Goldblum's new TV series RAINES. He's a joy to work with. Also. I periodically guest star on soaps. I have a future film project in the works. My husband is producing a film based out of Panama and there's a co-starring role for me as an anthropologist. It will be filmed sometime next year.
