Singer/songwriter JEREMY SCHONFELD is the composer of DRIFT, a musical that received critical acclaim at the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival. He and a group of distinguished Broadway musical performers will be appearing in concert May 5th at Birdland to launch his latest CD, 37 Notebooks. Photos in this article provided courtesy of Jeremy Schonfeld. Special thanks to Natalie Duckoff for her assistance in arranging this month's interview.
Tell us about your latest CD, 37 Notebooks and the upcoming Birdland show on May 5th. 37 Notebooks is a reference to the notebooks that I, and many artists carry around, in which we scribble notes, thoughts, ideas, lyrics, Scrabble scores, random phone numbers, etc. Over time notebooks fill up, they get place on a shelf, and I grab another one, revisiting the old ones every once and a while – looking back and discovering moments captured in time. It’s kind of like an artist’s diary. 37 Notebooks is a collection of songs I’ve written over the past few years. I’m fortunate to have an enormously talented circle of friends with whom I’ve worked with, to come in and perform with me. After recording all over the country for the past weeks and months with the band and individual singers, the concert on May 5th at Birdland will be the first and perhaps only opportunity to hear the album front to back. The performance will consist of a live band and a majority of the singers from the album, in perhaps the best concert venue in New York. It’s an honor not only to be invited back to perform at Birdland, but that these artists, all of whom are in incredibly high demand, are ready, willing, and able to perform along side of me.
In June, you'll be joining "Light In The Piazza" composer Adam Guettel, and a host of top Broadway performers, at Broadway Bootcamp in Atlanta, GA (a workshop for aspiring Broadway performers). What’s the most important piece of advice you'd like to pass on to future theatre songwriters? Persistence! Some of the work I’ve been involved with most recently is a result of my efforts in nurturing relationships over the years. The theatrical community is a tight knit one, so it’s important to become part of it, stay involved and have a constant presence. Eventually you’ll get your turn. Regarding songwriting itself, I view myself as a storyteller whose medium is song. Write what you know, but more importantly, tell the stories that are important to you. The more specific and fully realized your stories are, the more honest and real your songs will be.
Another amazing project you're a part of is the 9/11-inspired film CLEAR BLUE TUESDAY. Tell us about the film and your contributions to the project. The film itself traces the journey of eleven artists in New York, post 9/11, through a montage of songs and scenes. I was originally brought onto the project as the Music Supervisor, but was eventually convinced to join the cast. As an artist/musician on a similar journey in real life, it was the best thing that could have happened! I’m one of the featured members of the acting ensemble and wrote two songs for the film, including the grand finale in which everyone performs. It’s a project I’m very proud to be a part of.
I read on your website that you are developing a songwriter’s reality series for TV. Is it based on your own experiences? Isn’t everything? The idea was born out of the dual roles that artists often have to wear. That of an artist, but also dealing with the business side of the equation. It’s all about how art and commerce mix together in the new wild west of songwriting. Any other projects in the works? Wow. Yes, you could say so! I’ll be headed back to the studio to work on a solo follow-up album to DRIFT. Funny to think of 37 Notebooks as something other than "mine", but the album is primarily others performing my music, and I have 36 other notebooks of music to record! As previously mentioned, I’m going to be in Atlanta this summer where I’ll be Musical Director for the Broadway Boot Camp. Plus, I’m working on the theatrical version of DRIFT, and am getting started on potentially four other musical projects I’m not at liberty to discuss just yet. Stay tuned!
